Bad news: I had to remove the lovely bird feeders. The birds were not a problem, but what came with them were like the rabbits and a family of mice that destroyed a portion of my vegetables, and an absolutely horrid odour courtesy of the overwhelming wet feces that undulated the fence area where the feeders were located.

They were quite popular, having to refill both feeders every two or three days.

Had a lovely time bird watching : ) got to see a number of birds in my area including American goldfinches, cardinals, red-winged blackbirds, house sparrows, American robins, mourning doves, and these brown birds (pictured above) that were quite vicious and always managed to keep the bigger birds at bay. Poor bigger birds always had to wait for their meal

Campus herbs and potatoes

Everyone has been avoiding trips downtown with the G20 protests (that and, oh, the entire campus has been closed down - frightening stuff going on down there), so here are some starchy and fragrant pictures from last week.

We tediously strung the bamboo stakes together to create an innovative potato cage. As potato leaves appear, more and more soil is poured in until we will get a giant cage of dig-free potatoes at the end of the year.

It was pretty dirty work without the aid of gloves. That's a must-bring next time.

We later realized that we overdid it with the basil that covered 3/4 of the entire plot. Poor coriander will have to fight for its territory this summer.

Bumblebees have recently taken quite a liking to my potted bean plants. They latch on to their chosen bean and don't let go for hours even when my camera is an inch away from their fuzzy heads. Is this natural?!!

The peas are invading the carrot-beet plots. It's a weekly chore to detach some of the tendrils from the tall carrot leaves. On a side note: yes, sweet peas! Oh nom nom.

Five days ago the tomatoes looked like they were ready to push the beans off the "balcony."

Today, the tomatoes are succeeding in doing just that. I sense the beginning of a turf war.

The mesclun plot doesn't look too bad after moving several seedlings in between the broccoli and cauliflower plants.

For the longest time I couldn't figure out what was happening to the disappearing slug/snail bait. It seemed like the slugs/snails were consuming the bait, but they continued to live and prosper on my leafy vegetables. Maybe the bait wasn't as effective as the company claimed? Or there were more slugs/snails than I thought? Then I realized what was really going on...

Turns out tiny, reddish brown ants were feverishly collecting the bait. They didn't leave one single bait left on the ground.

Talk about team work!

These little guys were never a nuisance; actually, they provided both my niece and myself hours of entertainment much like the rolypoly sowbugs that excelled at faking their deaths and fuzzy bumblebees that have a weird habit of attaching themselves to the side of my house. There are only two or three harmless colonies, so I'm leaving them alone for now. Now I have to set out several bowls of alcohol in the ground to contain the slug/snail problem. I feel queasy just thinking about their gruesome deaths.

It's been extremely hot for the past several days, which translates to unexpected bolting time for all the cool crops. Poor things didn't even get the chance to grow up and enjoy life before hopping into my mouth : /

The first to bolt was none other than the spinach. I forgot to buy spinach the other day at the supermarket and resorted to collecting some of these leaves. They were a bit bitter but still edible :D

I had the goal of growing the biggest napas in the neighbourhood, but that won't be happening with the sudden onset of the sweltering, hot weather. They're showing signs of bolting with their bundling heads and "raised butts."

Harvested a few bolted and soon-to-bolt bok choy. Each family member got to nibble on one Precious.

Bunbun is getting used to the flood of veges coming in.

Aside from a bit of yellowing, all the lettuce is fine : D

...AHH, a wasp and it's building a hive! I stood there screaming until my dad came out with a broom and boldly knocked it out of the greenhouse. The wasp quickly buzzed away without harming anyone. Now I feel kind of bad for ruining its little home.

Mushroom logging

It took an hour to get to the 150 acre farm located in Caledon Hills from the downtown campus. We got lucky and narrowly escaped rush hour :D

We took stacks of damp logs to the equipment shed...

...where we drilled several dozen holes into each one of them. We had difficulty at first as the drill kept getting stuck in the thicker logs, but it wasn't too big of a problem.

These petite shiitake mycelium plugs topped with styrofoam circles went into each hole.

Three full hours passed before we could finish drilling and plugging all the logs. My back aches just thinking about it!

After all the hard work, we took a relaxing ride on the back of the tractor with the mycelium filled logs to the forest.

Sam ran after us while collecting a number of sticks. His fur is so very soft.

Into the dampest part of the forest we went.

We stacked all seventy five of the soon-to-be mushroom logs in rows for easy access. Now let's hope forest creatures keep their paws off of our precious.

Good-bye, farm! I'll be back next Spring when shiitake mushrooms start popping out.

It has been a few days since the sudden onset of the cold weather, and I'm glad to announce that everything is fine and dandy :D Cool crops are much more hardy than I thought.

The ten week old cauliflowers are looking rather stunted. Maybe it's due to the lack of sun in their shady territory.

Poor lettuces are the only exception. The ones that were transplanted as small seedlings are fine, but it looks like these big guys have just encountered a twister.

After last year's heartbreaking failure at growing this plant, I'm ecstatic to announce my first ever harvest of spinach! Most ended up in my niece's little belly though I did get to nibble on a few leaves and let me tell you it was worth all the trouble I went through. Nothing is comparable to the taste of fresh vegetables that you tended to day in, day out.

Went on a massive garden centre binge this weekend from Lowe's to Canadian Tire and several other stores in the neighbourhood. I picked up a packet of Mesclun seeds along with Pak Choy, and a pretty pot of African Daisies for Michelle. She tried propagating several stems from my giant daisy bush last year but alas! They didn't live their lives to the fullest. Hope this time things will be different :D

A cozy 16 degrees Celsius inside the mini greenhouse. It was a scorching 30 last week with the surprise appearance of the blazing sun in early March.

The thyme is loving the temperature. They're a little leggy but getting bushier each day.

The overwintering mesclun seedlings are taking their lovely time to grow.

One month old spinach seedlings are also taking a while to mature.

Thyme for Bunbun, approximately one month old. I read somewhere that this herb "repels" rabbits, so I'm left wondering if Bunbun is an anomaly because he loooves this stuff. He will beg for hours just to get one sprig.

Sweet pepper for myself. Also one month old. Will this seed from a store-bought pepper grow and bear fruit? We'll find out soon enough!

Two overwintering mesclun seedlings have popped out of the soil. It's been above 0 during the day lately and an average of +5 behind the screen doors, so it's no wonder plants are starting to appear.

Rosemary propagation

I didn't have much luck propagating or growing rosemary from seed last year. Hopefully this pink, powdery formula helps.

If all goes well, these two woody looking rosemary cuttings will one day form giant "poofball" hedges.

I transferred the red bean seedling from its paper towel home to a beaker filled with pebbles and water. Kathy's bamboo plant inspired this setting.

It's alive and doing quite well. I wonder if the wet roots will rot.

According to "The Edible Asian Garden," beans will sprout in a week or so. Isn't this neat?
On a side note, this picture is a bit deceiving. I drained the water after snapping this shot and placed the jar in a dark shelf. The seeds need to be rinsed two to three times a day. It has been less than a day and the seeds have already poofed up!

Red bean

The four red beans are starting to pop out of the soil.

Sadly, the sesame seeds aren't doing as well.

For some odd reason the red bean that I had left in between the paper towels already has leaves. This is proof that neglect doesn't always lead to a bad ending :D

These things are supposed to grow super fast. We'll see just how quickly they mature.

The sticky note attached to the side of the container indicates it contains 4 basil, 2 mesclun, and 6 thyme seedlings. Only the lettuce isn't doing too well, which isn't a surprise considering how they're not indoor plants

Tiny thyme seedlings don't want to talk to me.

Neither do the mesclun seedlings.
