More seedlings

Two week old long and lanky chives.

One week old bunching onions that resemble chives.

Five week old rosemary ( '3' ) look at the true leaves that resemble fish lips.

On a sadder note, the frail mint seeds are not germinating at all. I placed the few seeds that didn't crumble between my clumsy fingers in a peat pellet hoping that luck will find its way to my windowsill.

Got my hopes up

I started planning and sowing with the arrival of last week's warm, cozy weather then all of a sudden BAM! It's snowing again!

Winter fattened black birds having a blast in the snow.

Next morning. Burr.

Seedlings

Repotted globe basil for Michelle. The sweet basil seedlings are one month old.

Thyme for Bunbun, approximately one month old. I read somewhere that this herb "repels" rabbits, so I'm left wondering if Bunbun is an anomaly because he loooves this stuff. He will beg for hours just to get one sprig.

Sweet pepper for myself. Also one month old. Will this seed from a store-bought pepper grow and bear fruit? We'll find out soon enough!

Two overwintering mesclun seedlings have popped out of the soil. It's been above 0 during the day lately and an average of +5 behind the screen doors, so it's no wonder plants are starting to appear.

Two week old Bloomsdale spinach *raises fist* I will conquer you this time!

Rosemary propagation

I didn't have much luck propagating or growing rosemary from seed last year. Hopefully this pink, powdery formula helps.

If all goes well, these two woody looking rosemary cuttings will one day form giant "poofball" hedges.

Here's the only (out of 7) rosemary seedling that germinated.

Adzuki bean plant

Very leggy, approximately 6" tall. Looks like I need to start this again when the weather warms up.

Keeping it neat and organized

Here are two small storage containers and cases for seed storage, sold separately. Talk about a perfect fit!

Labels: name/variety/year

Such a cute, tiny container.

My niece's baby bottles are perfect for storing larger seeds and dried herbs. I knew these things would come in handy one day :D

Happy CNY!

Onion update

Good for the picking soon.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the rest of the indoor vegetables. Both the red beans and lettuces are too leggy, the mung beans failed to sprout properly and the sesame seeds didn't germinate at all. Worst of all, my beloved potted strawberry is dying! My baby : ( I hope things get better as the warm weather arrives.

Music garden

Toronto Music Garden. Reminds me of the "secret garden" my friend and I accidentally stumbled on at Niagara Falls.

Fungus Gnats

Info here. So yellow stick cards it is!

*update: it didn't work well, so I went back to sticky fly trap rolls.

Red bean seedling

I transferred the red bean seedling from its paper towel home to a beaker filled with pebbles and water. Kathy's bamboo plant inspired this setting.

It's alive and doing quite well. I wonder if the wet roots will rot.

Bean sprouting

According to "The Edible Asian Garden," beans will sprout in a week or so. Isn't this neat?
On a side note, this picture is a bit deceiving. I drained the water after snapping this shot and placed the jar in a dark shelf. The seeds need to be rinsed two to three times a day. It has been less than a day and the seeds have already poofed up!
